About the Artist old

Background

As a child, much of Marc’s time was spent watching his father work at solving problems.  It occurred to Marc that his father, who managed a specialty stitching shop with its intricate machines, had become extraordinarily innovative and was able to address any issue with the knowledge that he would somehow arrive at a solution.  Marc’s father transferred this ability to problem solve to Marc who knew he wanted to create or fix things and Marc decided to become an engineer.  Working with his hands gave him much pleasure and, over time, Marc worked at any task requiring skills which he may not have had but would soon acquire.

When Marc realized that the art world was filled with opportunities to learn new skills and create things he had not yet thought of, he was very excited.  He studied jewelry making for a few years but decided that he needed larger and stronger materials to work with and soon discovered welding.  “My very first day in a welding studio was truly the first day of the rest of my life” Marc says.  He found something where the process he was working in was as important as the work he was making.  Marc embraced the “technology” of welded sculpture through practice and observation and study of the work of David Smith who Marc cannot view often enough or long enough.
